Navaneeth is a Research Associate with the Financial Systems Design Initiative at Dvara Research. He graduated with an Integrated Masters in Development Studies from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and his area of interest lies in addressing the multifaceted issues of inequality.

Driven by his dedication to development-oriented research, Navaneeth has gained valuable experience through internships with organizations such as Pratham, IIM Kozhikode, and Ashoka’s Livelihoods for All Initiative. Further, he was also awarded the Don Lavoie fellowship for political economy in 2023 by the Mercatus Centre at George Mason University.

Debt distress among microfinance borrowers is on the rise, sufficiently so that it may be characterised as a crisis for the sector. This is driven by factors across the supply- and demand-sides, as well as factors inherent in the nature of the credit cycle, where periodic booms and busts have been present throughout history. To address this, we propose two sets of recommendations for the regulator: a set of recommendations that can be initiated in the short-term and another set that can be initiated over the medium-term.
