The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, especially in the financial sector, has increased the susceptibility of financial institutions to cyberattacks. The brief release of Mythos Preview demonstrates how advanced cyber capabilities, when used offensively, reduce the time and skill required by an attacker to discover and exploit vulnerabilities, thereby making cyberattacks more scalable and potent. The vulnerability of a financial institution no longer begins and ends within its own remit. In an interconnected ecosystem, financial institutions, irrespective of their size or business models, rely on fintechs, cloud providers and other technology service providers, creating a web of entry points for cyber risks. The consequences of a cyberattack can quickly translate into data risk, as is evident from the recent Bank of Baroda data breach. The breach reportedly involved a compromised credential that provided access to the bank’s file-sharing system, resulting in customer and internal documents from the bank surfacing on the dark web.
